A Proper Fraction has a top number less than its bottom number |

And let's say that this is 0, this is 1, and this is 2. And of course, we could keep going if we had more space to 3, 4, and on and on and on. And what I want to do, instead of taking a circle and dividing it into 5 equal sections, I want to take the section of our number line between 0 and 1 and divide it into 5 equal sections. Fraction simplifier Adding fractions example. 1/2 + 1/3 = (1×3+1×2) / (2×3) = 5/6. Subtracting fractions example. 1/2 - 1/3 = (1×3 - 1×2) / (2×3) = 1/6. Convert decimal 0.05 to a fraction. 0.05 = 1 / 20 as a fraction Step by Step Solution. To convert the decimal 0.05 to a fraction follow these steps: Step 1: Write down the number as a fraction of one. 0.05 = 0.05 / 1 Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point. As we have 2 numbers after the decimal point, we multiply both numerator and denominator by 100. Fractions - Table of Contents. Fractions - Topics. Three Types of Fractions
There are three types of fraction:
Fractions
A Fraction (such as 3/8) has two numbers:
NumeratorDenominator
The top number is the Numerator, it is the number of parts you have.
The bottom number is the Denominator, it is the number of parts the whole is divided into.
The bottom number is the Denominator, it is the number of parts the whole is divided into.
Example: 3/4 means:
- We have 3 parts
- Each part is a quarter (1/4) of a whole
So we can define the three types of fractions like this:
Proper Fractions: | The numerator is less than the denominator |
---|---|
Examples: 1/3, 3/4, 2/7 | |
Improper Fractions: | The numerator is greater than (or equal to) the denominator |
Examples: 4/3, 11/4, 7/7 | |
Mixed Fractions: | A whole number and proper fraction together |
Examples: 1 1/3, 2 1/4, 16 2/5 |
Proper Fractions
So, a proper fraction is just a fraction where the numerator (the top number) is less than the denominator (the bottom number). Here are some examples of proper fractions:
1/2 | 1/4 | 3/8 |
(One-Quarter) |
Calculator Use
Use this fraction calculator for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. Answers are fractions in lowest terms or mixed numbers in reduced form.
Input proper or improper fractions, select the math sign and click Calculate. This is a fraction calculator with steps shown in the solution.
If you have negative fractions insert a minus sign before the numerator. So if one of your fractions is -6/7, insert -6 in the numerator and 7 in the denominator.
Sometimes math problems include the word 'of,' as in What is 1/3 of 3/8? Of means you should multiply so you need to solve 1/3 × 3/8.
To do math with mixed numbers (whole numbers and fractions) use the Mixed Numbers Calculator.
Math on Fractions with Unlike Denominators
There are 2 cases where you need to know if your fractions have different denominators:
- if you are adding fractions
- if you are subtracting fractions
How to Add or Subtract Fractions
- Find the least common denominator
- You can use the LCD Calculator to find the least common denominator for a set of fractions
- For your first fraction, find what number you need to multiply the denominator by to result in the least common denominator
- Multiply the numerator and denominator of your first fraction by that number
- Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each fraction
- For addition equations, add the fraction numerators
- For subtraction equations, subtract the fraction numerators
- Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers
- Reduce the fraction to lowest terms
How to Multiply Fractions
- Multiply all numerators together
- Multiply all denominators together
- Reduce the result to lowest terms
How to Divide Fractions
- Rewrite the equation as in 'Keep, Change, Flip'
- Keep the first fraction
- Change the division sign to multiplication
- Flip the second fraction by switching the top and bottom numbers
- Multiply all numerators together
- Multiply all denominators together
- Reduce the result to lowest terms
Fraction Formulas
There is a way to add or subtract fractions without finding the least common denominator (LCD). This method involves cross multiplication of the fractions. See the formulas below.
You may find that it is easier to use these formulas than to do the math to find the least common denominator.
The formulas for multiplying and dividing fractions follow the same process as described above.
Adding Fractions
The formula for adding fractions is:
( dfrac{a}{b} + dfrac{c}{d} = dfrac{ad + bc}{bd} )
Example steps: Calendarpro for google 3 3 download free.
( dfrac{2}{6} + dfrac{1}{4} = dfrac{(2times4) + (6times1)}{6times4} )
Subtracting Fractions
The formula for subtracting fractions is:
( dfrac{a}{b} - dfrac{c}{d} = dfrac{ad - bc}{bd} )
Example steps:
( dfrac{2}{6} - dfrac{1}{4} = dfrac{(2times4) - (6times1)}{6times4} )
Multiplying Fractions
The formula for multiplying fractions is:
( dfrac{a}{b} times dfrac{c}{d} = dfrac{ac}{bd} )
Example steps:
( dfrac{2}{6} times dfrac{1}{4} = dfrac{2times1}{6times4} )
Dividing Fractions
The formula for dividing fractions is:
( dfrac{a}{b} div dfrac{c}{d} = dfrac{ad}{bc} )
